Fans at football stadiums observed a minute's silence before the start of the Scottish Cup match on Saturday, paying tribute to former Scotland, Manchester United and Manchester City forward Denis Law.


Tributes were paid to Lowe, who died on Friday aged 84.

Nicknamed 'The King' and 'The Policeman', Law spent 11 years at Old Trafford. He scored 237 goals in 404 appearances for Manchester United, making him the third highest scorer of all time behind Wayne Rooney and Bobby Charlton. Prime Minister John Swinney said Law was a "good son of Scotland" and "in a class of his own".

Law was part of the team that won Manchester United their first European Cup in 1968, but was unable to play in the final due to injury


He was sold three times during his time working for British record companies.

Commentators say Law gave the team "confidence" during his time with Scotland.


"Whenever Denis Law is in the team you always think he can score goals," he said. “That’s why he was respected and feared everywhere we played, around the world.”

Manchester United have said the club are mourning the death of the ‘King of the Stretford End’.


“He will be remembered as one of the club’s best and most loved players.”


“He was a top player whose talent, spirit and love for the game made him a hero for a generation.”


Aberdeen Football Club, which Denis Law supported throughout his life, said: "Everyone at Aberdeen Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Aberdeen football legend Denis Law.


"He was one of greatest footballers and his legacy will live on in the North East. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.


The Scotland international described Law as a "really good player", adding: "We will never see his like again."
